About Eastern Hokkaido
Sitting at the edge of the country, Eastern Hokkaido is where national parks stretch uninterrupted, coastlines face the Sea of Okhotsk, and the landscape feels closer to wilderness than anything else in Japan.
Three areas anchor the region: Shiretoko, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site known for its rugged coastline and wildlife; Akan-Mashu, one of Hokkaido's oldest national parks, home to caldera lakes and the living traditions of the Ainu; and Kushiro, where Japan's largest wetland stretches beneath open sky.
Life here is shaped by the land and sea. Fishing towns along the Okhotsk coast supply some of Japan's finest seafood, from sea urchin and crab to scallops and salmon, while inland, vast farmlands produce Hokkaido's celebrated dairy.
In winter, the region transforms entirely. Drift ice arrives on the coast, forests fall silent, and eagles gather along the frozen shore. But in summer, Eastern Hokkaido is something rarer: a Japan that is cool, quiet, and almost untouched.

Atsuya
Atsuya has spent years photographing wildlife across two of Japan's most remote extremes, first Okinawa and now Eastern Hokkaido. When he joined our team, he brought relationships built over years: the fishermen who work Rausu's kelp beds, the guides who lead through Akan's forests, the people who make this remote region run quietly. It is access we are fortunate to gain and develop together.
Like every Untold Japan Tour Leader, Atsuya goes well beyond logistics, staying close by without hovering, and adjusting an itinerary without it ever feeling like a scramble.

In his own words
What first drew you to wildlife photography?
"I originally worked as a wedding and portrait photographer in Okinawa. One day, I visited a zoo and found myself fascinated by photographing animals. Unlike people, they never pose on command, and that unpredictability made every photo feel like a challenge."
Is there a moment that's stayed with you?
"During drift ice season, I watched the sunrise surrounded by more than 500 eagles in the golden morning light. Another time, a pod of more than 80 orcas surfaced so close their breath caught the light and made small rainbows. I've never forgotten either one."
