The Stay
Zenagi is a private kominka stay in Kiso, Nagano, where Edo-era heritage meets modern calm. Traditional local craftsmanship is preserved and elevated through a modern, minimalist design. The result feels quietly dramatic, rooted in history but unlike anywhere else in Japan.
Inside, everything is tactile and intentional. Glossed dark floors with a lacquer-like sheen. Walls that feel like ink paintings created through the textures of washi. Custom furniture shaped by local artisans and artists, from hand-carved chestnut wood pieces to native Kiso timber throughout. It is a space designed for stillness, detail, and presence.
The guest rooms are private and spacious, arranged across two levels. On the first floor, you will find the hinoki bath, filled with the scent of cypress, where the simple act of bathing is an event on its own. Upstairs is a calm bedroom and living area made for slow mornings and early nights. Zenagi is a retreat that settles into you, long after you leave.
The Experiences
Every one-night stay at Zenagi includes one curated activity of your choosing. Pick between adventures in nature or a deeper connection to local culture.

The Concept
Zenagi was created for one purpose: to design the kind of holiday that stays with you. It is a place to reconnect with the people you came with, and to experience Japan in a way that feels grounded, personal, and intentional. Each stay is shaped around a simple idea. The best memories are not rushed.
Zenagi is often described as an expedition hotel, an invitation to explore “Planet Japan.” Set between Nagano and Gifu, this is a region where countryside traditions still feel alive. Samurai trails and post towns remain in the forests of Kiso. Craftsmanship shaped over more than a thousand years continues in mountain workshops. Here, nature is not scenery. It guides the rhythm of the day.

At the heart of Zenagi is storytelling and sustainability. The team sees themselves as storytellers of the land, sharing the culture, history, and everyday life shaped in harmony with nature. Zenagi also exists to help protect these places for the future, supporting rural communities and preserving traditions, landscapes, and skills that are at risk of disappearing. This is closely aligned with Untold Japan’s approach: partnering with the people who keep regional culture alive and inviting guests to experience it with care.
